Though it’s been a while since Anne Rice first started writing about vampires and witches, the Mayfair Witches series are still immensely popular. Until recently, they’ve been less publicly celebrated than The Vampire Chronicles, but with the coming AMC series, it looks like Ann Rice’s fans have one more chance to dive into her magical world.

The Witching Hour is the first book in The Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy. It follows Rowan Mayfair—a brilliant neurosurgeon from New Orleans with special powers—while she tries to come to terms with them and her past. The novel slowly deconstructs Rowan’s family tree and takes the reader from the 1990s in New Orleans to San Francisco, Amsterdam, a French château, and even to 17th-century Scotland. It also uncovers an entirely different universe—the one full of magic. On her way to understanding herself and her powers, Rowan also learns that she descends from a male witch named Julien Mayfair and that the first Mayfair witch Suzanne conjured up a spirit named Lasher that has been following all Mayfair witches for generations. After The Witching Hour, Anne Rice proceeded to the story of Lasher.

Lasher—the 2d Mayfair Witches Book

In Lasher, Anne Rice made things even more fascinating. Lasher seeks to reproduce his race in other women and tries to do it with other Mayfair women, but they cannot withstand it. Rowan travels with him to Houston, where she manages to escape. She gives birth to her fully-grown Taltos daughter—Emaleth. In this book, Lasher’s history is revealed, and the origin and the identity of Taltos are explained—they’re born knowing what they need to survive independently, hence the entire reproduction quest. The book is full of twists and turns; it will keep even the most demanding reader in suspense.

Taltos—the 3d Mayfair Witches Book

In Taltos, Ashlar is the founder of a multimillion-dollar company in New York. He used to believe himself to be the last Taltos; however, it is not true. Once he learns that another male Taltos has been seen, things change at once. He travels to Europe in an attempt to find a soul mate and give the Taltos species a second chance. That’s where he meets Rowan and Michele, who have their own agenda and plenty of drama related to Emaleth, Mona, and Aaron. More pages of The Mayfair Witches trilogy to devour.

According to the reviews we’ve studied, the show has met a storm of controversy. Some of The Witching Hour book fans reported a lot of inconsistency; others noted that it’s really good because it gives much space to the saga and the characters’ backstories. We suppose you have to watch and decide for yourself.
